Rebel Moon: Part One – A Child of Fire

When a colony on the edge of the galaxy finds itself threatened by the armies of the tyrannical Regent Balisarius, they dispatch a young woman with a mysterious past to seek out warriors from neighboring planets to help them take a stand.

Starring lead actress Sofia Boutella – who’s most noticeably known for her role in “The Mummy” featuring Tom Cruise.

Rebel Moon: Part One – A Child of Fire promises to be an epic interstellar adventurous movie, offering insane visuals, action, and lore. You could say it’s a crossover of ‘Star Wars’, ‘And Star Trek’, however, it doesn’t share the innocent sentimental side of the galaxy but a grim, and catastrophic side of the universe ruled by an iron hand, though not all is what it seems going from the trailer.

The film on its own fails to create an ever-lasting impression and self-identity – it seems to take much inspiration from earlier predecessors that came before it to a point that it doesn’t come off as a Zack Snyder movie, unless for the constant slow motion effects which I can not believe is coming out of my mouth – but it didn’t do this film any justice.

The thought of having to watch another sequel to Rebel Moon is just trauma for me at this point lol…

Not to mention, the action scenes look poorly choreographed in terms of execution rather than portrayal – you can tell that they’re following a script step by step which doesn’t look appealing or polished. To think that I viewed an entire two-hour-long movie about a main lead, going coast to coast, corner to corner across the galaxy collecting among the warriors along the way only for it to end so abruptly without solving any of the current problems is flabbergasting in all honesty.

In terms of positivity, the one element that I would say for Rebel Moon is that it goes over and beyond with CGI and VFX visual effects. From beginning to end Rebel Moon is a visual masterpiece showcasing phenomenal landscapes, and breathtaking views from the point of view stance.

Sofia Boutella who plays (Kora) does a great job leading her supporting cast of talented actors and actresses which includes: Charlie Hunnam, Djimon Hounsou, Ray Fisher, Staz Nair, and Bae Doona. It may seem quick to evaluate their chemistry but from the little time we got to see them together on screen, it seems as though they worked well together.

I’d recommend Rebel Moon to those who want to try something new, an interplanetary sci-fi with a darker tone, despairing element, and a captivating lore with a hint of mystery and thriller.

Those who are more interested in the lore rather than expectation for action, those who are intrigued by its mysterious yet complex story and a sense of adventure rather than getting to the point of the bat.

I give Rebel Moon a 2.8 out of 5 rating.

I just really wanted to have this slight retro sci-fi, but not. It's weird, I am really happy with the final tone of it, but it was really hard to get to because it just took a lot of me going, “Yes, no, yes, no,” without any real hard piece of reference where we could say, “Make it look like that.” But I'm really happy, and I'm glad you saw it that way because that's what we went for.
