Blue Beetle

Blue Beetle makes its unforgettable introduction to the DC Universe and with it brings along a fresh new look about being a superhero with the importance surrounding family.

Released on the 18th of August 2023 by Distributor Warner Bros. Pictures featuring some heavyweight giants in the entertainment industry such as George Lopez and Becky G.

The premise of Blue Beetle follows Jaime Reyes played by Xolo Maridueña who suddenly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology called the Scarab.

When the Scarab chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he’s bestowed with an incredible suit of armor that’s capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the superhero Blue Beetle.

Now that you’ve gotten the jest of things – let’s dive into the review.

My first impression of the Blue Beetle movie is that it presents itself as a film set in a world far ahead of ours, with technology being far more advanced whilst still keeping some of the traditional atmospheres such as four-wheeled cars, two wheels bikes, and bricked houses yet the advancements of hovering choppers and fully armored soldier suits. In some instances, I felt the vibes of “Superman: Beyond The Super-Verse”.

Jaime Reyes is a likable young fella, recently out of college and carrying the hopes and dreams of the Reyes family on his shoulder as he’s the first to ever graduate from college in his family – an achievement one should never take for granted.

However, not all goes as planned as only the luckiest fish ever gets their wanted job after graduating, a reality Jaime has yet to discover and through this naïve nature will find himself down the rabbit hole of wonders.

One could say this is a film about the uprising of the Mexican culture and introspection of oneself as it explores a lot of family aspects and dynamics within the Mexican demographic but by far my favorite character in this film would have to be Rudy Reyes played by Comedy Legend – George Lopez.

I’m sure there are plenty of people out there who can relate to his character of one of those uncles who have all the love to give and a brilliant mind, however, find themselves with the short end of the stick when it comes to life yet continue to be there for his family bringing with him laughter and fun activities.

One of the key elements that make Blue Beetle a great family movie that it can be watched with the entire Familia and is enjoyable for the kids just as much as the adults is the Reyes family dynamic and interactions, each person brings in a different vibe and I loved how they incorporated singing to almost every situation only for them to end up in a panic again.

The one thing that I would say hinders Blue Beetle from being a great superhero movie is that there aren’t enough action scenes, however, that doesn’t take away from the fact that it delivered a wonderful sense of suspense, tension, and buildup – capturing your attention completely whenever things are about to happen.

On that note, I was impressed by the CGI effects more so towards the final fight, sticking true to the DC Comics nature by showing you how brutal and dirty these kinds of fights can get.

To end the Blue Beetle review, I recommend this film to those who love DC Comics and in particular – “Teen Titans” and “Justice League.”

Those interested in learning a little more about the Mexican demographic family culture even though some may regard it as stereotypical – facts remain that it’s focused around a Mexican family.

It presents some incredible visuals and absurdly great comedy, with a twist of encouragement towards those who feel life has nothing to offer, however, the villains aren’t delved that deep into until the very end.

I give Blue Beetle a 3.3 out of 5 rating.

“It's okay to let other cultures be their own authentic self, especially when the cultures that are not monolithic. There's so many more stories to tell within our communities and also with other communities from other cultures. For me, it's always been a thing about when you let us tell our stories authentically, without fear of the unknown of the other; sometimes we can find way more connection than we would if, society keeps trying to force what the Latino should be.”
