One Piece Episode 1071: Luffy’s Peak – Attained! Gear 5

One Piece Episode 1071 IT’S THAT TIME, Ladies AND Gentlemen, that moment we’ve all been waiting for since the beginning of the year – One Piece Episode 1071: Luffy’s Peak – Attained! Gear 5!!!!

I’ll be diving right into the review as I don’t want to waste any more time than I already have and my-oh-my what a spectacular episode it was.

The episode begins right where we last left off – with an unconscious Luffy laying dead on the ground as his heart begins beating to the tune of the Drums of Liberation, and whilst this is happening, Luffy is releasing an unprecedented amount of Haki, so much so that he splits the sky wide open, revealing the full moon emulating ever so brightly.

At this point, we shift scenes heading over to Mariejois where the five elders are discussing a certain risk factor that has prompted them to sacrifice one of their best agents, angering Emperor Kaido rather than face the latter. One Piece Episode 1071
It’s then disclosed that Luffy, our main protagonist, I’m talking the best MC in the entire shounen industry, who we’ve followed for over a thousand episodes has not eaten the Rubber-Rubber fruit but the Mythical Zoan, Human Human Type – Model Nika, also known as Sun God – Nika “The Warrior of Liberation”.

It’s at this point that my brain exploded, like how, how is it that after a thousand episodes, never once did I figure out or question why Luffy was able to change the trajectory of this attack with the property of Rubber?

Bare with me for a moment because this episode is revealing secrets one after another like hot popcorn fresh out of the pot, it’s popping secrets everywhere.

So not only is Luffy the best MC, but he is JoyBoy as well, the prominent figure that had lived and promised the previous Poseidon from eight hundred years ago that one day a certain person would carry the weight of the world and fulfill the promise that he failed to achieve by bringing the fishmen to live among the rest of the world on the surface.

My mind explodes again BOOOOOOOOM!!!!!! Oppenhiemer’s “Little Boy” has just been dropped.

There’s then another shift in scenes, this time we’re shown the climax between Shogun Orochi and Komurasaki.

As I said earlier, this episode is popping right – so you already know what I’m about to say. Here it comes, now as Orochi is covered in debris from the fallen ceiling, Komurasaki comes out and unveils that she is Kozuki Hiyori, the daughter of the late Kozuki Oden that was mercilessly murdered by both Orochi and Kaido. One Piece Episode 1071 - Komurasaki
Now I understand that many fans did not appreciate this scene due to it not being relevant to the Wano Arc in any major way, however, can we appreciate the unwavering discipline and restraint that Hiyori had to conjure to not try and kill this two-timing snake whenever she laid eyes on him.

On that note, the conversation she had with Orochi before Luffy’s reveal I found quite interesting…

Hiyori states that the Kozuki are a clan of people that always keep their promise. This got me thinking, Luffy and Momonosuke have always had an interesting dynamic, one of the siblings one may say.

So is it too far-fetched to theorize that JoyBoy may have been from the land of Wano, as a Kozuki?

Upon returning to the main event – we finally get to see Luffy’s ridiculous transformation -“Gear 5”, which is nothing less than the entire cast of the “Looney-Toons” put into one character on Steroids.

With this awakening, not only is Luffy able to affect the surrounding area but anything he so touches as well becomes of rubbery substance, making him impractically immune to physical damage and crazier than ever.

This new form suits Luffy so well simply because it brings out the wacky, over-the-top fun personality of Luffy to a new light, making the impossible possible, and the animation throughout the entire episode was film quality, godly in every sense, from the music, the instruments, the drums of liberation – once again affirming to everyone that Wano will be an arc to cherish.

Shout out to Mayumi Tanaka who voices Luffy and everyone that was involved in the presentation and making of Gear 5. The delivery was spot on better than I expected, took me over 2hours to finish a 24mins episode, I can’t wait for the next episode which is seemingly looking to top even this one.

My only issue with the episode is in regards to the reused animation scenes, both of the reveal and towards the end where we were shown flashbacks from 2 or 3 episodes back, thought that was unnecessary, however, that will never kill my vibe.

I give One Piece Episode 1071 a 4.5 out of 5 rating.
