Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King

Welcome back again to LSR, and today we’ll be reviewing the first-ever, animated film of Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King by Yūki Tabata.

Distributed by Netflix, the film was released on the 16th of June 2023 receiving a mixture of positive and negative reviews but not necessarily for what you’d think.

The premise follows Asta, a boy who was born with no magic in a world where magic is everything. The young boy aims to become the Wizard King, overcoming challenging adversity, proving his power, and keeping his oath with his friends.

On his return from training on the Dark Continent, mysterious figures appear in the sky proclaiming to be the past Wizard Kings who’ve returned to bring enlightenment to the Clover Kingdom.

However, is the film any good? Let’s dive right into the review.

Straight off the bat, Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King catches your attention with its introduction of our antagonist Conrad, a past wizard King of the Clover Kingdom and predecessor to Julius Nova Chrono.

His character is tragic and defined by misfortune as he was born during one of the worst times in the Clover Kingdom, where people with little or without magic were looked down upon and treated harshly throughout the entire Kingdom.

Because of all the things he had seen whilst climbing the ranks, he inevitably develops a disdain towards the Kingdom he once vowed to protect, however, he isn’t alone.

One thing I can certainly promise fans of the Black Clover series is that this film has a lot of action, so much so, one can only ask for a time-out due to the frequency of non-stop action from the beginning.

Not to mention it also features a wide cast including every squad member from every guild including their captains. So one can only ask, how did they manage to give everyone screen time?

Good thing that’s something you need not worry yourself about as only the baddest, most prominent figures have their one on one fights, either than that, our antagonists are so overpowered teaming up to defeat them is our only choice.

Brace yourself for some god-tier animation, which makes the Black Clover two-year hiatus worthwhile. I’m not saying the anime itself wasn’t good, however, this movie takes it up another level.

Prepare for some unexpected matchups that will have you wondering how on earth does Asta get a one-on-one? Yet, Yuno needed a hand from our favorite toilet dweller and Nozel working together to overcome.

From the texture, shading, and visual expressions, one can only be left speechless and in awe at the incredible production from Studio Pierrot.

My only problem with the film is that it doesn’t necessarily explain to the audience when all of this is taking part. Sure Asta has his buffy build but it doesn’t exactly tell you whether this is before or after the fight with the dark triad.

Aside from that, I think Princia Funnybunny, Jester Garandros, and Edward Avalaché are some of the best villains within the series, they’re not single-minded like the antagonists in the anime, and they have a relatable side to them, showing that their only human even though they once dawned the title of Wizard King.

To conclude this review of Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King – I say this film is truly incredible, delivering for both fans and those new to the series.

It doesn’t complicate things in any way but builds enough tension and mystery around the characters to keep you glued to the screen.

I give Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King a 4 out of 5 rating.
