Cyberpunk: Edgerunners
Ladies and gentlemen, it’s time. Time to call about the anime that has stolen many people’s hearts across the entire globe with its creativity, original characters, and chaotic nature. It’s time, I finally spoke about Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.
Animation studio Trigger, probably best known for “Kill La Kill” and producers CD Projekt Red have come together to create the animation series that many assume will take the crown for best animation for 2022.
Now it should be mentioned that even though Cyberpunk: Edgerunners uses the name – Cyberpunk in its title, the events that happen during the series are at least a year before the events of Cyberpunk 2077.
When Cyberpunk 2077 was first announced, it was said to be the most anticipated game for the year 2020, however, when it was released it was only met with a lot of disappointment, glitches, and a staggeringly unhappy community. That is until Cyberpunk: Edgerunners reignited the spark once again.
We follow the character of David Martinez, a young kid that’s been raised in the low establishments of Night City by his mother, Gloria Martinez.
Gloria Martinez had big dreams for her son rather than becoming what everyone else living in Night City ends up becoming, consumed.
However, one fateful afternoon while driving back home, David and his mother are involved in a drive-by shooting which ends up with David becoming an orphan.
Having to live alone proves hard for David so, in the act of desperation and seeing the unjust, unfair laws of the world, David decides to become an Edgerunner, a mercenary outlaw known as Cyberpunk.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunner brings in the advanced human relationship and co-dependence to technology and body modification, in a way, it’s a mixture of Ghost in a Shell and Altered Carbon.
On the surface, Night City looks visually appealing with its colorful lights and futuristic advancement of technology but if you look further within, away from all the lights that try to keep you distracted, like a Casino. You discover that Night City itself is the killer of dreams and hope.
The cybertronic life of Night City encourages people to turn to a life of crime, it motivates, cultivates, and feeds off it.
Augmentation is just the way of life in Cyberpunk. But like everything that gives you power, there is an bigger price to pay for it. Cyber psychosis.
This is the effect that occurs to those with modified cybernetics. The need for more power leads to the use and installment of more cyberware, eventually when your body is more cyberware than human then you are more likely to get cyber psychosis through the use of cybernetics.
The characters are true to themselves from the get-go. There is nothing too complicated about the characters in Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, what you see is what you get.
Though after watching the series, it’s no wonder the fan base and web went crazy over the character of Rebecca.
Rebecca is a young girl that’s a straight talker, doesn’t beat around the bush, she’s animated and full of life.
At first, you’d be more concerned about her age but as time goes on and you start to comprehend the type of universe Cyberpunk is about, Rebecca begins to completely embody the world of Cyberpunk.
There is a lot of profanity and nudity throughout the series, so please do not watch this around your children. It’s only 10 episodes, each consisting of no more than 25 minutes so unless you want to have your child turn out like Rebecca, I advise you to put the kids to bed before watching lol…
There aren’t much action scenes as I would have expected but the action that we do get will blow your mind.
No concern for life whatsoever, it gets gory, I mean I can’t even remember how many heads had been blown off by the end of the series, not that because it was a few, no it’s because there were too many, it’s brutal.
Overall, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners has not only revived the dead game of Cyberpunk 2077 but has brought it back better than ever. The series goes to show the endless possibilities that the game has to offer.
Outstanding visuals that make you fall in love with the show over and over again, great music, fantastic opening with a tragic ending that has you wanting to cling onto the hope that doesn’t exist.
Night City is a living beast.

“When we were creating the story…I was also writing the scenario myself and I felt that it wasn’t really anime-ish when I was writing it. But I felt that I was able to get a step closer during the storyboard phase."
