Extraction 2

Chris Hemsworth returns as Tyler Rake from the clutches of death in the second installment of Extraction 2, by director Sam Hargrave.

First released on the 16th of June 2023 by distributor Netflix, Extraction 2 promises to take its protagonist through the toughest situation he’s ever been in, offering non-stop action for the 2-hour-long film.

Directed by Sam Hargrave who is best known for his work on films such as Avengers: Endgame (2019) and Atomic Blonde (2017) since his debut in 2003.

The premise continues from where we last left off, where Tyler Rake played by Chris Hemsworth after barely surviving his grievous wounds from his previous mission in Dhaka, Bangladesh, retires from the life of mercenary but is abruptly brought back to do one last salvage rescue, and his team consisting of Nik Khan and Yaz Khan is ready to take on their next mission.

One of the key aspects that makes this film extremely captivating would be its phenomenal cinematography in particular the drone shots throughout this film were out of this world, perhaps some of the best drone shoots I’ve ever seen in the film.

Never does it feel like the shots are too wide or close but it will instead ensnare your very sense making you appreciate the visual marvel and technical difficulty put into the making of every scene.

However, when putting Extraction 2 on the comparative scale of action-thriller, a lot of the action scenes match the ambiance you first saw and felt from John Wick.

Whereas it’s not simply a battle of who has the biggest gun or the most bullets – there’s a battle of wills and Tyler Rake’s unwavering spirit to save both targets and his friends is magnetizing to watch.

Unlike the first Extraction which didn’t dive into the character of Tyler Rake as much nor his companions Nik Khan played by the beautiful – Golshifteh Farahani and Yaz Khan by Adam Bessa – we get to see a softer, gentle side to him which in contrary compels him to risk life and limb without a seconds thought.

As for the antagonists of the film, the Georgian Crime Syndicate a.k.a the Nagazi, their presence in the film makes a whole difference especially when considering their style of approach whether it be in broad daylight, crowded areas with police presence makes no difference when aiming to exact their revenge for a comrade.

However, their leader Zurab played by Tornike Gogrichiani as much as one may consider him cruel and heartless – his a tragic character along with his young brother Davit.

Having lived and been raised in a war-torn country from an early age had not only psychologically affected their perspective of the world but it taught them to be tough, adding their abusive father into the mix only made things worse for them.

Yet even though they suffered throughout their younger days, the tough lessons taught to them by their father stuck.

The only reason I can say Zurab and the Nagazi gang lost wasn’t due to them being outsmarted by Tyler but due to Zurab after losing his brother Davit – allowing all reason and logic to stand on the sidelines while blindly following the rage within him that had slowly been simmering – losing Davit was his boiling point and a soldier that’s lost his mental is a double-edged sword willing to sacrifice friends/family all to satisfy his unyielding urge.

To conclude Extractions 2’s review, I recommend this film for the action-thriller lovers out there, It’s action-packed with outstanding choreography some lasting an entire ten minutes straight and the action is not limited by their weapon of choice but the whole environment can be subjected as a weapon be it walls, stairs, doors and the list goes on. Truly Magnificent.
I give Extraction 2 a 3.7 out of 5 rating.
