The Cloned Tyrone

With all the conspiracies out and about regarding Jamie Foxx being a clone – They Cloned Tyrone could not have been released at a more convenient time.

Released on the 21st of July 2023 by distributor Netflix, They Cloned Tyrone is a blend of comedy, mystery, and a touch of sci-fi that will keep you glued to your seat in tears of joy.

The premise follows a series of eerie events that thrusts an unlikely trio dealing in shady nighty activities onto the trail of a nefarious government conspiracy in this pulpy mystery caper.

The film features John Boyega, Jamie Foxx, and Teyonah Parris. Directed by Juel Taylor, who’s most notably recognized for his work on films such as “Space Jam: A New Legacy” and “Creed II”.

Now this film begins ambiguous, without telling you what the main plot is or where exactly we’ll be headed but its fresh feel of the seventies and spectacular cinematography is wonderfully done, allowing you to continue watching even though the story hasn’t picked up it.

Though the film gives off the seventies vibe around it, you’ll be quick to realize that the cars, mobile devices, and technological advancement are way ahead of their time.

John Boyega plays the character of – Fontaine, a drug dealer from the Glen that hardly ever says much. One day, while doing his collection, Fontaine is gunned down by his rival competition for injuring one of his men yet wakes up the following morning without the slightest clue of the day before.

This inevitably begins the movie.

Fontaine is serious, doesn’t speak much and whenever he does decide to speak – it’s straight to the out. He usually uses body language and facial expressions to get his response across which is John Boyega delivered perfectly.

Jamie Foxx on the other hand plays the role of – Slick Charles, a pimp that’s on the verge of losing his cash cows and is trying by all means to relive his glory days.

While Teyonah Parris plays the character of Yo-Yo, one of Slick Charles’s girls (most probably the smartest one) that is always talking about retirement and yet, finds herself drawn back by the charms of Mr. Slick Charles himself.

If you didn’t love Jamie before then you certainly will love him by the end of this film. His quick response and hilarious outlook on every situation are such a blessing in disguise, and together with John and Teyonah, they created one of the most fun, intriguing, and thrilling films I’ve seen all 2023.

They Cloned Tyrone for me blossomed whenever this trio was together on screen, their different dynamics are electrifying, especially Teyonah, and Jamie, their like that old married coupe that doesn’t tell anyone they’re married unless it slips out the other’s mouth during an argument, giving off the classic African American family energy, which is rarely seen nowadays.

As for the message of the film, its clear is water – addressing some heavy conspiracies that have been questioned over time without answers for decades on end.

What if they were a secret government somewhere, a government or organization formed with the sole purpose/aim of keeping the American minority poor, experimenting on them with the ability to brainwash everyone to achieve their true goal, which is to whiten the population by getting rid of its African citizens.

To end this review, They Cloned Tyrone is a social commentary that goes out of its way to deliver great comedy and thriller, while trying to keep a mysterious sci-fi feel to it but is sadly overshadowed by its incredible cast that carries the film into a comedic artwork.

The visuals and style are alluring to see, and the camera work and cinematography feel personal carrying through the emotions of the characters as if you were there with them.

I give They Cloned Tyrone a 4.2 out of 5 rating.

When I was in film school I felt like, “Oh, that ain't quite what I thought.” I would make something in film school and be like, “Hm, it's not exactly what I saw,” you know what I mean? It's always like, “Hmm.” But because they brought the characters to life, the biggest difference is really, it's just so hard to imagine truly what it would look like when you're in a room and Jamie Foxx is inhabiting the character, and Teyonah Parris and John Boyega is inhabiting the character. Even the supporting cast of, like, Kiefer Sutherland and David Alan Grier, it's like impossible to imagine what that's gonna feel like tonally seeing those characters come to life with such a crazy amount of talent.
