Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City

Welcome to Raccoon City, once the booming home of pharmaceutical giant Umbrella Corp. The company’s exodus left the city a wasteland, a dying town with great evil brewing below the surface. When that evil is unleashed, a group of survivors must work together to uncover the truth behind Umbrella and make it through the night.

Johannes Roberts claimed that this film would do the games justice however I have to disagree with that statement of his. For a man that claimed to play the games from his high school days starting with the fourth installment, Welcome to Raccoon City was a bit of a letdown, though there were some memorable moments here and there.

I’m not saying the entire movie is cringed in any way, on the contrary Welcome to Raccoon City had some good moments and some bad moments. Firstly, the cast is spot-on amazing, secondly, we have been to Raccoon City many times before but never in such great detail as to meet some of its local citizens and my favorite part of the movie, Brian Irons played by (Donal Logue) was by far the best part of this film.

In most horror movies, you normally hardly find a character who knows what’s the deal before things hit the fan and Brain Irons is that character. As soon as the sirens started ringing, the police chief started packing his stuff and left with notice whatsoever lol…

As for the police rookie, Leon S. Kennedy should never have held a gun again in his life for shooting his partner in the ass let alone a bazooka. Out of all the characters we get in the film, Leon had it the worst in terms of not staying with the source material.

Albert Wesker is another major character in the Resident Evil franchise whose background is still being explored to this day, whether or not he would have pulled the trigger and killed the young girl is up to the audience to choose. But it helps to see that there was still some humanity in him before he became a test subject to Project W. There is still more lore to explore regarding Wesker’s early childhood.

This movie is based on the survivors of the 1998 incident which resulted in the destruction of Raccoon City as a whole, though in the original games Leon and Chris didn’t meet till much later.

I enjoyed the film even though many aspects of the film are nothing close to the source material.
